1908

Friday, 3rd January Yet another extravagant party at Bateman’s on New Year’s Eve. Kipling received the Nobel Prize for Literature in early December, and his house overflowed with well-wishers. I can remember the food and drink well enough - cold birds, ham, tongue, foie gras, gold patties, jellies, ices, champagne and - my particular nemesis that evening - rum punch. I clearly recall standing on a chair at one point and reciting - to applause - the villages of the East Sussex Weald in alphabetical order, namely: Alciston, Alfriston, Arlington, Berwick, Best Beech Hill, Birling Gap, Blackboys, Blackham, Bodle Street Green, Boreham Street, Broad Oak, Burlow, Buxted, Chalvington with Ripe, Chelwood Gate, Chiddingly, Coleman’s Hatch, Cooper’s Green, Cowbeech, Cross in Hand, Crowborough, Danehill, Duddleswell, East Dean, East Hoathly with Halland, Eridge Green, Etchingwood, Exceat, Fairwarp, Five Ash Down, Five Ashes, Fletching, Folkington, Forest Row, Framfield, Frant, Friston, Furner’s Green, Golden Cross, Groombridge, Gun Hill, Hadlow Down, Hailsham, Halland, Hammerwood, Hankham, Hartfield, Heathfield, Hellingly, Heron’s Ghyll, Herstmonceux, High Hurstwood, Holtye, Hooe, Hooe Common, Horam, Horney Common, Isfield, Jevington, Laughton, Litlington, Little Horsted, Little London, Lower Dicker, Lower Horsebridge, Lullington, Magham Down, Maresfield, Mark Cross, Mayfield, Maynard’s Green, Milton Street, Muddles Green, Ninfield, Nutley, Old Heathfield, Pevensey, Pevensey Bay, Polegate, Poundgate, Punnet’s Town, Rickney, Roser’s Cross, Rotherfield, Rushlake Green, Selmeston, Stone Cross, Stunts Green, Tidebrook, Three Cups Corner, Uckfield, Upper Dicker, Upper Hartfield, Vines Cross, Wadhurst, Waldron, Warbleton, Wartling, West Dean, Westham, Whitesmith, Willingdon, Wilmington, Windmill Hill, Winton, Withyham, Wych Cross. Chalvington with Ripe. Muddles Green. Three Cups Corner. It was the closest to poetry I shall ever come, but I fell off the chair at the end. The band struck up for the dancing and Kipling took me outside to where he has his own small watermill, and I doused my head with cold water.

Fiona and I danced, and then in the dawn I found myself on a sofa with Freeman Freeman-Thomas and others, expatiating on the importance in detective work of using the senses quickly: noting physical features, particularly eyes, ears and noses, and the influence of trades on the form of the hand; the nature of the physical objects on a person, particularly dress and shoes, but including rings, watches, and walking sticks; personal mannerisms; accents and the use of dialect words and expressions; perfumes, and powders and eau de Cologne. I went on to talk of animal characteristics, particularly their tracks and prints, and including human shoe and boot prints, bicycle tyre prints and carriage wheel tracks, and no doubt very soon, automobile tyre tracks; effects of the weather; dried blood; the infinite variety of handwriting, inks and writing paper; the smell and detritus of different firearms and explosives; differences in typewritten documents; and the varieties of pipe, cigar and cigarette ash on which I have written a small monograph - Upon the Distinction Between the Ashes of the Various Tobaccos -in which I distinguish 140 varieties. To my chagrin I found that Freeman-Thomas had been asleep for most of my discourse.
